Biographical Sketch

Jean-Pierre Hall� is Professor of Medicine at the Universit� de Montr�al, and Endocrinologist, head of the Diabetes Clinical Research Unit, and director of the Research Laboratory on Bio-artificial Therapies at the Maisonneuve- Rosemont Hospital Research Center. He was general practitioner at the H�pital G�n�ral du Christ-Roi de Verdun. Then, he was trained in Internal Medicine and Endocrinology in the hospital network of the Universit� de Montr�al and in the laboratory of Dr Alcide Chapdelaine at the Centre de recherche Guy-Bernier. He was chief of the Endocrinology divisions at Sacr�-Coeur Hospital from 1982 to 1986 and at Maisonneuve-Rosemont Hospital from 1986 to 1995. In 1982, he founded the Diabetes Day Care Center at Sacr�-Coeur Hospital, and was director of the clinic until 1986. He founded a center of the same kind at Maisonneuve-Rosemont Hospital in 1987 and was director of that center until 1989. He was the first director of clinical research at Maisonneuve-Rosemont Hospital from 1995 to 2000, and set up the Clinical Research Unit. Since 1987, his laboratory research focused on the treatment of insulin-dependent diabetes by the transplantation of islets of Langerhans immunoprotected by microencapsulation.

Selected Scientific Contributions

Since 1987, Dr Hall�'s laboratory research focuses on the micro- encapsulation and transplantation of islets of Langerhans. He has developed different methods for the micro-encapsulation of islets and for the in vitro and in vivo evaluation of different microcapsule characteristics. He has developed a method for producing ultrasmall APA microcapsules using high voltage electrostatic pulses, and has characterized the system. He has also addressed fundamental issues related to the host reaction to microencapsulated islets and the promotion of microencapsulated islet cell survival. Dr Hall�'s group, in association with the �cole Polytechnique de Montr�al, has pioneered the use of high performance physico- chemical analysis, including nanotechnologies (e.g. ToF-SIMS), in the study and development of microencapsulation technologies. He has also developed a method for producing microcapsules with covalent cross-links between the membrane components, which are resistant to extreme chemical and mechanical stresses. He has shown that these microcapsules can prevent the dissemination of very malignant encapsulated cells, which standard capsules cannot do. He has participated in over 65 multi-center clinical research projects, investigating either new treatments for diabetes or long-term complications of diabetes. Dr Hall� is the author of over 100 articles, abstracts and patent, has delivered numerous lectures and has been actively involved in continuous medical education activities. He has written 15 book chapters and is the leading editor of a 668 pages book entitled "The Bioartificial Pancreas and other Biohybrid Therapies" that was written by 81 scientists from 32 institutions and 12 countries.
