Scientific Highlights

The research of Dr. Rosenberg's laboratory has greatly increased our understanding of islet cell neogenesis. He also introduced the concept of post-isolation islet cell apoptosis and supporting trophic factors in the islet micro-environment, which has important implications for successful islet transplantation.

Dr. Rosenberg has trained many research students and fellows: 7 undergraduate students, 13 medical students and residents, 4 M.Sc students, 6 Ph.D. students, and 2 Postdoctoral fellows. His students are now working in faculties of Medicine across North America.

Publications

Dr. Lawrence Rosenberg attended Medicine at McGill University (Montreal), where he obtained his M.D.,C.M. in 1979. He then trained in General Surgery at McGill, completing his medical residency and Ph.D. in experimental surgery in1985, in the area of pancreatic cell differentiation. Dr. Rosenberg subsequently undertook post-doctoral studies and fellowship training in transplantation surgery at the University of Michigan. In 1987 he returned to McGill as Assistant Professor of Surgery and Director of Transplantation at the Montreal General Hospital. He is currently Professor of Surgery and Medicine and Director of the Division of Surgical Research at McGill, and A.G. Thompson Chair of Surgical Research at the McGill University Health Center.

The contributions of Dr. Rosenberg have been acknowledged by many national and international agencies including the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), the Canadian Institute of Health Research (CIHR), and the Canadian Diabetes Association (CDA).

In addition, Dr. Rosenberg has received many career awards and fellowships, including: Medical Research Council of Canada Fellowship, McLaughlin Foundation Fellowship, Medical Research Council of Canada (MRC) Scholarship, and Senior Clinician-Scientist Award and Chercheur National Award, both from the Fonds de la recherche en santé du Quebec (FRSQ). He is the only Canadian to have been a recipient of the prestigious American Surgical Association Foundation Fellowship.

Dr. Rosenberg is on the editorial board of Graft and Pancreatology. He has also served on the scientific committees of the JDRF, MRC, CIHR, US National Institutes of Health (NIH), and CDA. He is the author of over 100 peer-reviewed publications and has been invited to present his work at many international scientific meetings.

Recently, Dr. Rosenberg worked with Drs. Marc Prentki (Univeristy of Montreal) and Dusica Maysinger (McGill University) to create the new JDRF Center for Beta-cell Replacement at McGill and the University of Montreal. Dr. Rosenberg is the Director of the Center.
